Freedom to Move

Smithfield Foods

The following is from the standards for pigs written by Humane Farm Animal Care.

"E 18: Freedom of movement: The pig must be free to turn around without difficulty at all times. Individual stalls or crates that prevent pigs from turning around (except for hospital pens) and tethers for pigs are prohibited." - Humane Farm Animal Care

It's almost unbelievable to think that basic movements, like the ability to turn one's body around, must be written down and enforced as a "standard" of living. In their Facebook photo's caption, Smithfield claims that pigs prefer to be in individual crates than in common areas.
